Mildered Pierce

Excellent movie. love it everytime. I am so glad to have been able to place this in my classic movies collection as I have been wanting to get it for along time. Joan Crawford as always plays a fantastic part. And I her love for her daughter despite the fact she is horrible to her mother. As the saying goes "only a mother could love".
I highly recommend this movie and if you are seeing for the first time you will be glued. I was and still do. It is the kind of movie where you can't help but voice your opinion about whats going on while you are watching it.(Or that could just be me) I am sure any classic movie lover will enjoy this movie.

please put on blu-ray

If any of Joan's movies deserves to be on blu-ray it's her defining picture, "Mildred Pierce." As soon as it comes out I will be among the first to pre-order it. Joan's legacy will live on forever because of movies like this.

brilliant hard boiled film , script , etc hollywood can no longer do

for all the reasons listed elsewhere amongst these reviews , this is a must own 45' masterpiece . the entire cast is outstanding . further proof that they not only "did it before" but that additionally it was much better . at this modest price you'll either be thrilled or deep in a minority of viewers . when they say "they don't make um like they used to" it's not just flattering . it's true .

"Joan Sacrifices For Her Daughter, But Gains An Oscar"
Added 12/28/2009
Very few Hollywood stars can claim they have experienced comebacks more than other stars, but Joan Crawford hovers all in that respect. After MGM dumped her in the early forties citing she was "boxoffice poison", Warner Brothers signed Crawford to star in this potboiler about a woman who sacrifices everything to please her selfish, ungrateful child and to give her everything money can buy. Director Michael Curtiz didn't want Joan. He felt her shoulder pads and her stiff acting wasn't what was warranted for the role of Mildred. He actually wanted Babara Stanwyck, who turned the role down citing she could never play opposite a character as evil as the daughter Veda. After having a screen test (an embarrassement to Crawford after she had been in films for over 18 years) Curtiz was blown away by Crawford's performance. In one scene during preproduction Joan waited for Curtiz to yell "cut, cut", but didn't hear anything. She then looked over to the director's chair and noticed Curtiz crying. He told her, "I love you baby...you've got the part". "Mildred Pierce" is one of the best films from the 1940's, soap operish at best, but flawless in its cinematography and performances. It's also one of the best in the film noir series that shows a lot of shadows in its scenes, a common occurrence in french films that was brought to American movie making. The highlight to this DVD is also an informative documentary produced by Turner Broadcasting on Joan Crawford called "Always The Star", featuring interviews with many people who knew Crawford, including Betsy Palmer (her co-star in "Queen Bee"), Christina Crawford (Joan's daughter and author of "Mommie Dearest"), Vincent Sherman (former lover and director), and more. There are also a series of neat trailers from Joan's Warner Brother's films.
