Plot: Melinda Gordon communicates with earthbound spirits, ghosts who cling to the living because they have unfinished business that prevents them from moving beyond this plane and into the light. Inspired in part by the work of famed medium James Van Praagh and of Mary Ann Winkowski, a widely followed communicator with spirits, GHOST WHISPERER follows Melinda in her sometimes chilling, sometimes heart-rending and sometimes amusing attempts to mediate between ghosts and those they haunt. The tense borderline between life and death that she navigates is dangerous and unknowable, so Melinda's job brings with it lethal jeopardy - but also miracles. When her paramedic husband, Jim, gave his life to help a friend, his knowledge of the "beyond" showed him a way to stay with Melinda: his soul entered the vacant body of a momentarily lifeless accident victim. And now a new miracle waits for Jim and Melinda, as they welcome a son, who has been foretold to carry gifts even more extraordinary than his mother's. After the boy is born, the show will jump several years into the future, letting us watch Jim and Melinda embrace the challenge of raising this gifted - and very important - child. Other things will have changed since we last saw them. Jim has finished medical school and is practicing medicine, friend Delia Banks has built a small but growing real estate business, and Delia's son, Ned, has enrolled in college where he studies anthropology of the occult. Colleague Eli - a psychologist who hears but cannot see ghosts - has come to accept his new gift as Melinda always has: it is sometimes a blessing and sometimes a curse, but always a responsibility that must be honored - to helps souls in need - alive or dead - to find emotional closure.
