Plot: Marshall Herskovitz directed this tearjerking schizophrenic combination of The Wonder Years and To Kill a Mockingbird. It is 1972, and John Leary (Danny De Vito) and his two sons Jack (Robert J. Steinmiller Jr.) and Dylan (Miko Hughes) have just moved to Oakland, California. John is a television celebrity who has been fired from one station after another, appearing now on a cheap local station as the Saturday night host of a horror-film showcase. But John spends most of the time drinking and grieving over the loss of his wife, who was recently killed in an accident. The children try to adapt to their new school, and the family tries to adapt to the collection of kooks that populate their neighborhood. Foremost among them is Norman Strick (Gary Sinise), a sinister neo-Nazi who lives across the street. When Strick circulates a petition for the local white-supremacist candidate, John gets drunk and attacks him on his television show. I love Danny Devito movies so you can imagine my disappointment when I was unable to view "Jack the Bear" on T.V. Everytime this picture comes on T.V. it is on a cable channel that we don't have. I'm glad I finally got to view it again and finally I can share it with my family.

I did not get to see this movie because my mailman stole it. Oh, that's right. Stole it. My girlfriend moved out. He thought everyone did, so he just kept whatever he was to deliver at my house!!! If I had to do over again I would have sent it UPS, at least they are not scumbags.

This is a great family movie. I watched it as a kid and it is even better then I remembered it. I definitely recommend it to anyone.

Danny DeVito and Gary Sinease are good but it is the kids in this movie that steal the show.

Delightful, touching, fun, halloweeny movie

This movie is in my top 5 all-time movies. I'm sure it wasn't a block buster. It has no stunning special fx. It has a great cast and is wonderfully acted and it hits me in my heart every time I see it. I don't watch many movies more than once, but I watch this movie regularly. It's about loss, love and sticking together when the going gets tough, along with many other things.
