About XML / RSS

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is an XML based format used for content distribution and syndication. Subscribing to RSS Feeds allows you to receive custom, up-to-date information from your favorite online content sources without having to regularly check the site for updates.

How to Access RSS Feeds

Installing a news reader that displays RSS feeds from the websites you specify allows you to keep up to date with all your favorite content by checking the RSS feeds you have subscribed to and displaying new items from each feed. Instead of downloading a dedicated news reader, you can also use a web-based news reader.

What kind of content does Videodetective.com syndicate via RSS?

Videodetective.com is now offering the following feeds in the RSS format. Our feeds are lists of the most popular movies on our site with links to their respective previews. The lists are created dynamically and are updated daily.

Videodetective's What's Hot
Videodetective's Theatrical Releases
Videodetective's DVD Releases

What are the terms of use?

The feeds are provided free of charge for use by individuals and non-profit organizations for personal, and or commercial uses. We ask that you provide attribution to VideoDetective.com in connection with your use of the feeds.

If you provide this attribution in text, please use: "Videodetective.com." If you provide this attribution with a graphic, please use the Video Detective logo that we have included in the feed itself.

We reserve all rights in and to the Video Detective logo, and your right to use the Video Detective logo is limited to providing attribution in connection with these RSS feeds.

Video Detective also reserves the right to cease distributing these feeds at any time for any reason.

How can I use RSS?

Typical applications for consuming or using RSS include:

  • Using a program known as a News Aggregator to collect, update and display RSS feeds
  • Incorporating RSS feeds into weblogs

News Aggregators (also called news readers) will download and display RSS feeds for you. A number of free and commercial News Aggregators are available for download. Popular news readers include AmphetaDesk, NetNewsWire, and Radio Userland.

Many aggregators are separate, "stand-alone" programs such as those listed above; other services will let you add RSS feeds to a Web page.

Another way many people use RSS feeds is by incorporating content into weblogs, or "blogs". Blogs are web pages comprised of usually short, frequently updated items and web links. Blogging as a publishing tool is used for many purposes: traditional journalism, personal journals, group discussions around a topic, and many combinations in-between.

How to Display RSS Feeds on Your Web Site

Your webmaster simply needs to choose a method for converting each desired RSS feed to web page format (HTML). It only needs to be set up once, and the process need not be complex. After that, the headlines will be automatically updated on your website.

Feedroll is for those not already familiar with RSS/XML technologies. No programming is required; simply fill out the form and Feedroll will provide simple Javascript code to paste into your web page where you want our headlines to appear. ($$$)

Many other tools for converting RSS into HTML are available for a variety of platforms, including .NET, ASP, Perl, and PHP. If you don't see what you need here, use your favorite search engine to search for "RSS" and your platform of choice.
