April, 1949, British warship HMS Amethyst sails up the Yangtse River on her way to Nanking, China, to deliver supplies to the British Embassy. Without warning, the Communist Chinese shore batteries open fire and the frigate lies grounded and badly damaged. In charge, Lieutenant Commander Kerans (Richard Todd) is not prepared for his surviving crew and his ship to remain as a hostage for the Chinese to use as an international pawn.
