Movie legend Edward G. Robinson stars, Robert Aldrich (The Dirty Dozen) makes his feature directorial debut and Big Leaguer swings for the entertainment fences with its tale of hopefuls eager to make the cut at a New York Giants baseball training camp. Vera-Ellen (On the Town) shares star billing, playing a team assistant whose professional interest in a player turns personal. But at the film’s center is Robinson, giving a savvy portrayal of an ex-major-leaguer who puts candidates through their paces and reports to the front office on who has the potential to make it to the big time. Included among the prospects are former real-life minor leaguer Jeff Richards (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers) as a third baseman trying to hide his big-league dream from his disapproving dad, and Richard Jaeckel (Battleground) as a hotshot hurler. Appearances by Al Campanis and Hall of Famer Carl Hubbell add authenticity. Play ball!
