In 1928, frustrated newspaper reporter Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (Oscar(r) winner Mary Steenburgen) leaves her husband and career to move to an isolated orange grove in the Florida bayou to concentrate on writing fiction. But instead of solitude, Marjorie finds herself surrounded by interesting characters: a devoted servant who becomes a fast friend (Alfre Woodard) a handsome local businessman (Peter Coyote) a backwoods local man (Rip Torn) and the man's young daughter (Dana Hill), who becomes Marjorie's biggest inspiration.
