Lovejoy Mason is an independent young Londoner living with a family, the Vincents, while her actress mother is away. The Vincents own a restaurant and whilst Lovejoy is fond of them, she is bored. However, one day a passer-by drops a packet of cornflower seeds, so she decides to set up a garden of her own. She steals from the church fund to buy tools and although this pricks her conscience slightly, she soon forgets it. However her garden is wrecked by vandals. One of the gang members suggests she replants in the local churchyard but when he hears of her dishonesty devises her a suitable penance.
