Bearded Charles Augustus Holt, the book reviewer for The Chronicle , is derisively known as "Whiskers" because of his timid personality. When he is fired from his job, Whiskers accepts the advice of his girl friend, Lucy Walters, to write a novel and get a shave. On the day that he cleans off his beard, gangster Brute Hanson, his exact double, is released from Alcatraz. The resemblance causes Brute's moll, Maxie Carewe, and his gang members, Dopey and Dude, to mistake the mild-mannered Whiskers for their boss.
