Considered by many as the greatest adaptation of the Victor Hugo classic novel about the deformed bell ringer of Notre Dame who rescues a beautiful gypsy woman from his evil guardian and falls in love with her. Charles Laughton is remarkable as the deaf, grotesque hunchback who rescues a beautiful gypsy girl (Maureen O'Hara) from the noose of an ugly mob. Laughton endured a daily five-and-a-half-hour makeup session to become Quasimodo, the mocked and vilified bellringer of Notre Dame. The result was one of his best performances: outsized yet nuanced, heartrending yet inspiring. O'Hara, in her U.S. film debut, is the gypsy Esmeralda, whose simple act of pity frees the emotions within him. Featuring the screen debut of Academy Award-winner Edmond O'Brien (D.O.A., The Wild Bunch) and also starring Oscar-winner Thomas Mitchell (Stagecoach) and Cedrick Hardwicke (The Ten Commandments). Produced by Academy Award-recipient Pandro S. Berman (Ivanhoe, Father of the Bride), the film received an Oscar nomination for its outstanding musical score.
