When it comes to corporate conspiracy thrillers there’s none more slow burning than Michael Mann’s smoking (cigarette) of a thriller The Insider. Based on a segment from the 60 Minutes television news reportage series, The Insider is based on an alleged true story of how a tobacco industry insider Jeffrey Wigand (Russell Crowe) turns whistleblower about how the big tobacco companies plan to make cigarettes more addictive. Al Pacino plays the television producer who has to decide whether to take on the might of corporate lawyers and go with Wigand’s testimony or just to let it go. Mann’s adult and intelligent thriller unfolds slowly and methodically and never takes the easy storytelling option. The insider is a must for conspiracy theory and news junkies alike.
