Dirk Bogarde plays Michael, an RAF pilot during the Second World War. After escaping from his crashed plane in Delhi, he is posted to a special Japanese language course for interrogators of prisoners of war. He falls in love with the teacher, a beautiful Japanese girl, and the two are secretly married. Michael is posted to Burma, where he is captured. He hears that his wife is ill and so attempts to escape.
