What happens when you combine a glittering all-star cast, headed up by Meg Ryan and Annette Bening; celebrated comedy writer/director Diane English ("Murphy Brown"); and the gilded world of New York sophisticates? The answer is THE WOMEN, a sparkling cocktail of female camaraderie, marital manners and sweet revenge based on Clare Boothe Luce's 1936 stage play. The film whisks us into the clubby sandbox of 21st Century Manhattan society, where the publishing, fashion and finance industries play. It's a universe of Blahniks and business meetings, custom-blended manicures and charity committees, sexy restaurants and serious money. At the center of the tale is Ryan's character, Mary Haines, a thoroughly modern woman suddenly faced with an age-old dilemma: a two-timing husband. Naturally, her loyal girlfriends rally to her side with advice, support and the odd reconnaissance mission. But when her best pal makes a Faustian bargain, a private matter becomes public knowledge and it's not only a marriage that's in trouble.
