This is a film that provides a gateway into Roald Dahl’s (Hugh Bonneville) heart, mind and soul, but equally, also into the heart, mind and soul of his partner Patricia Neal (Keeley Hawes). It’s the story of Dahl getting over the death of his seven-year-old daughter by writing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory while his movie star wife, actress Patricia Neal also came to terms with the tragedy in her own way by eventually winning an Oscar for Hud.
