Grey's Anatomy: The First Cut Is the Deepest

When Meredith Grey posts a Roommates Wanted ad, George O’Malley and Izzie Stevens beg her to move in but Meredith believes there should be a definite line between work and personal relationships. Aren’t lines meant to be crossed? As soon as Meredith is alone in the elevator with Derek, she blurts out, “I’m not going out with you. I’m drawing a line.” Derek asks, “Is this an imaginary line?” (He’s such a flirt!) She throws him against the wall and they have a hot and heavy make-out session. A rape victim is rushed into the O.R. and you won’t believe what they pull out of the victim’s mouth. A penis! Now Meredith has to carry it around in a cooler until the police arrive. Ew, can you imagine? Alex, the snarky intern who called Meredith a “nurse” is transferred to Bailey’s team. Cristina hates him and lets him know. You’ve got to love her honesty. Going on rounds is torture for them. Their patients have nothing wrong so they don’t get to do procedures, and worst of all they have to endure hugs from the doing-just-fine patients. They’re not exactly touchy-feely types. Izzie risks her job when she treats a woman hiding outside who is afraid to go in for treatment because she has no green card. (Iz has so much heart.) Meredith is really affected by the rape victim. George takes Meredith to the Pediatric Ward because babies make you happy. One of the babies turns blue and Meredith discovers he has a heart murmur. The Pediatric Intern kicks Meredith out when Meredith questions the baby’s treatment plan. (Really? It’s just some tests.) Meredith grabs her penis cooler and leaves in a huff. Dr. Burke confronts Chief Webber about why Dr. Shepherd is also a candidate for the future Chief position. Webber tells him that Burke’s too arrogant and if he wants the chief position, he has to earn it. Tensions are going to rise! Meredith just can’t keep it in any longer and admits to Cristina that she kissed Derek in the elevator. Cristina can’t blame her, he’s “McDreamy.” (So dreamy!) Suddenly, a car screeches into the hospital driveway. The driver collapses to the ground, blood covering his groin. You guessed it, it’s the rapist. Bailey—without an ounce of remorse—announces they won’t be able to reattach his penis. (Yeah, we don’t feel so bad for him either.) Going against policy, Meredith advises the baby’s parents to get tests. The Pediatric doctor berates her for interfering. This is not her patient. Surprisingly, Burke backs her up. (Here’s his chance to impress the Chief.) Meredith was right; the baby needs surgery, but Burke says, “If you ever pull a stunt like that again, I will make your residency here Hell on Earth.” We like that he still lets her scrub in on the surgery. Derek asks Burke to drinks but Burke declines. When Derek makes the comment, “Keep your friends close, your enemies closer,” Burke tells him, “You’re not the enemy. You’re the competition.” Meredith invites Izzie and George to move in the house. She realizes that you can live your life drawing lines or you can live your life crossing them. She wants to see the view on the other side. Clearly, plentiful lines are soon to be crossed.
