Co-directed with frequent collaborator Chris Strachwitz of legendary “down home music” label Arhoolie Records, Chulas Fronteras has been deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress with a place in their National Film Registry for close to three decades. From soulful, lively dance tunes to political work songs, norteño, or música norteña, has evolved since the turn of the 20th century into a unique Mexican-American hybrid. Blank and Strachwitz link the music’s spirit and vitality to the strong family bonds of Tejanos and don’t overlook the hardships and the Chicano experience of migrating from state to state to work in the fields; with music and indelible interviews with seminal conjunto legends such as Flaco Jiménez, Lydia Mendoza, Los Alegres de Terán, and others.
