El pastor

Anselmo (Miguel Martin), a middle-aged shepherd, lives a poor but contented life in a rustic hut amid the flat, shimmering plains and endless skies of Castile, close to a growing village. His sheepdog, Pillo, and his wooly charges are his only company, in addition to a few friends in town. Anselmo’s bucolic life is interrupted one day when a pair of executives from the Espanax Construction company pay him a visit with an offer to buy his land on which they plan to build a new residential complex. After quickly turning down their offer, the shepherd soon learns that if Espanax cannot purchase his land, they will withdraw similar offers for adjacent plots and the owners, his neighbors, become increasingly desperate to sell. When they resort to hostile measures to convince the peaceful shepherd to sell his land, a violent struggle fueled by greed ensues, turning former friends into bitter enemies.
