In 2011, John Outlaw, a beloved high school football coach in Lufkin, Texas, died suddenly and unexpectedly during a morning run. For the 2012 season, Outlaw is replaced by former assistant coach Todd Quick. Quick is tested by players who had come to know John but are pushing to understand the new coach's style. The relationship between the players and Todd quickly turns into a team running on the fumes of John Outlaw's guidance and the Panthers’ new energy. Todd moves as fast as possible to gain the trust of the players so that the overall season isn't lost.
