This ambitious documentary looks at the 2006 World Cup and the lives of people who have so much invested in the global soccer tournament. Director Michael Apted profiles a pioneering female Iranian reporter as she gets ready to cover the event, and he contrasts the degree of enthusiasm among fans in working-class African and South American communities with the relative indifference in the United States. The film also depicts South Africa's preparations to host the World Cup in 2010.
