René Arthur Gagnon was a United States Marine Corps corporal who participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. He was generally known as being one of the three surviving flag raisers of the six Marines who raised the U.S. flag on top of Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945. This was changed on October 16, 2019, when the Marine Corps announced publicly that Corporal Harold Keller was actually the flag raiser thought to have been Gagnon.
