For many science fiction and fantasy bookworms, Princess Leia and Xena are about the only royalty they'd ever want to be. But Katherine wants to get her head out of books and into the social scene by being MADE into Miss Ledyard Fair. Katie meets her MADE coach, Valerie, at Connecticut's Thompson International Speedway to show that pageant winners can have more interests than just the competitions. Valerie, a former Miss Cambridge pageant queen, gives Katherine her first task: take her favorite books into new places and spark conversation with unfamiliar people, coaxing them into reading one of the novels. The next morning, Katie's MADE fitness coach, Ryan, wakes her for a morning workout. When it's time for Katie's family vacation, she's more than happy to leave her MADE coaches behind. She and her family go to Orlando, but Katie is shocked when Valerie appears at the water park. Valerie gives Katie a sign to wear and flyers to hand out to convince strangers into spending their next vacation in Ledyard, Conn. Back at home, Katie's runway coach, Leo Ninja, greets her. He works with her through practice walks and vogue dancing to add personality to her runway strut. Afterwards, it's more work with Valerie, as they work on pageant questions and getting Katie to stop saying, "um..." before every thought. When interview day comes, Katherine nails it. But that doesn't mean the work is over. Valerie gives Katie another assignment: make beaded key-chains (Katie's hobby) for the entire football team. At first she's apprehensive, to the point of crying, but the coach eases her worries and Katie gets thank-you hugs from the players. Katie is riding high, and things just get better when Valerie takes Katie to Manhattan for some big-city shopping and a makeover. With her hot new look, Katherine takes her newfound confidence back to school the day before the pageant and gets compliments from everyone. At the pageant, Katie does well and looks great on the stage, and wins Miss Congeniality. She appreciates the award because it was voted on by the other girls competing along with her. Katie may not have won the pageant, but she was MADE into the woman she dreamed to be.
