Alabama Moon

When Moon Blake's loving but government-paranoid father, Oliver, dies from an untreated leg wound, Moon must move away from the hidden Alabamian cave he grew up in. But Constable Sanders, the local mean cop, catches Moon with his fathers guns, abuses him, and has him locked away till majority age for 'assault' within Mr. Gene's grim Pinson home for boys. Moon makes friends with Kit and Hal, a shy, sickly boy and an apparent bully and sets up an escape, in which they are the only three to follow through. Although Sanders may not have caught them, they are still up against the unforgiving elements.
