Directed by Alexander Korda himself, this tells the tale of a prospective Cabinet minister, Sir Robert Chiltern (Hugh Williams), whose career is jeopardised by a mysterious woman, Mrs Cheveley (Paulette Goddard). Sir Robert is planning to expose a fraudulent canal scheme, until Mrs Cheveley bribes him into supporting it instead. She blackmails him with the knowledge that he has allegedly previously sold government secrets to a foreign buyer. His situation threatens both his social position and his marriage, and being an honourable man, he must think deftly to resolve the situation.
