Dirk Bogarde stars as the drunken lawyer, Sidney Carton, who finds himself making a noble sacrifice during the French Revolution in this celebrated adaptation of the Dickens classic. In London, he encounters a young French girl, Lucie (Dorothy Tutin), and a man named Darnay, who has fled from France in disgust at the treatment of the common people. Darnay is in fact an aristocrat but his identity is hidden. He and Lucie fall in love and marry, but, in a drunken state, Carton professes to her that he loves her also. When the revolution breaks out in France, Darnay’s true identity is exposed. Answering a plea for help from Lucie, Carton arrives in Paris.
