Sent to North Africa, a young British archaeologist, David (Trevor Howard), finds himself the reluctant witness of a gun-running operation. He ignores it, and goes to the local inn where he meets and falls in love with the beautiful Anna. However he realises that her brother is one of the gun-runners and works for a far larger operation that controls many of the villagers. When he finds a Golden Salamander, an ancient artefact believed to be all-powerful, he realises that he must take action for his own honour and for the woman he loves.
