One year ago, Agent Sam Koenig gets a call from Agent Billy Koenig. A short time later, he dons his outfit and a nice, new lanyard for Coulson. The two men exchange pleasantries and a SkyShop catalogue. Their discussion is about the status of the team members, the fact that Gonzalez is MIA and something known as Theta Protocol. It involves the HeliCarrier they are keeping hidden away. Skye is torn between her loyalty to S.H.I.E.L.D. and her connection to the Inhumans as tensions rise between the groups, and Coulson reveals a secret he's been hiding from even those closest to him. In the present day, Coulson lays it all out for Gonzalez now that the Avengers have averted a global crisis in Sokovia. He suggests that there be one S.H.I.E.L.D. where he acts as director and others serve as his advisers. Gonzalez worries that there is another battle that needs attention closer to home. It’s one a HeliCarrier won’t solve. Raina is embracing her visions. She recently saw something that suggests the Kree are coming. Raina convinces Jaiying to let her go with Gordon to find the place in her dream. They transport onto the HeliCarrier. Alarms sound as they make their way to cargo area in the lower deck. They find the secret alien substance that was recovered from a dig site a hundred years ago. Hydra had been looking for it, too. Skye is by Lincoln’s bedside when he finally awakens. She reports that the people of Afterlife can be called Inhumans. Coulson wants to have a chat with Jaiying, who is busy keeping peace between Cal, Gordon and Raina. Skye will try to get her mother to agree to the meeting. This may prove to be a challenge. Raina lets Gordon know that she had a vision of S.H.I.E.L.D. sending Afterlife up in flames. She wants to be the one to meet with them. In random updates, Fitz and Simmons let Agent 33 know that they’ve removed all parts of the Hydra indoctrination from her brain. Coulson and May struggle to get past their past. Cal offers to have himself turned over to S.H.I.E.L.D. as a way to protect his family. Gonzalez is chosen to be the one to meet with Jaiying. Just before the mission begins, Mack lets Coulson know that he’s leaving S.H.I.E.L.D. He doesn’t trust someone with alien blood in him. Finally, Agent 33 disguises herself as May to get revenge on Bobbi. A brutal fight takes place on a QuinJet. Bobbi gets the upper hand until she’s iced by Ward. He has plans for her.Raina is surprised to see that nobody believes that she is trying to save Afterlife. That’s probably because everyone who knows her believes she’s a manipulative liar. Moments later, a QuinJet lands. Skye takes Cal to the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that arrive at Afterlife. Gonzalez meets with Jaiying. He presents her with a traditional Chinese gift that was recovered from Daniel Whitehall’s office. It was something she had always wanted to give to Skye. Gonzalez asks to meet the people of Afterlife. He wants to keep a record of them—to index them. It’ll be a way to keep track of the enhanced people who may someday try to do harm to others. Jaiying opens up a box which contains a Terrigen crystal which she created. It’s harmless to Inhumans, but deadly to all others. CRASH! Jaiying smashes the crystal. Gonzalez can’t survive in its presence. He turns to stone. Jaiying takes his gun. BANG! She shoots herself in the shoulder to make it look like she was the one who was attacked. Moments later, she declares war on S.H.I.E.L.D.
